What to Expect

Who can attend an adaptive yoga class?

  • Individuals living with mobility disabilities, such as partial or total paralysis, amputation, severe spinal cord injury, severe arthritis, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, head injury, spina bifida and cerebral palsy.
  • If possible, we recommend a family member or caregiver attend class with you.

What can I expect in an adaptive yoga class?

  • An hour to 90-minute session in which you will do a variety of poses.
  • Classes will be conducted either in a chair, on the floor or some combination of both.  Assistants will help with transfers to the floor as needed.
  • Classes will include basic movements (yoga poses), a focus on inner awareness when doing those poses and breathing.
  • You may be asked to remove your shoes — assistants will help you as needed.
  • You may receive gentle physical adjustments from the teacher and assistants. These adjustments are intended to enhance your experience.
  • You will learn to use props such as blankets, blocks and belts.
